Threat: British Gas customers are being sent scam emails claiming they are owed refunds
A sophisticated phishing email pretending to be from British Gas is being sent to customers saying they are owed refunds.
The email, using the same font and dangerous site logo as the energy provider, includes a link to ‘access your account’ and says customers are ‘eligible for overpayment’ of £467.20.
Paul Henthorne wrote on Twitter: ‘The same fonts, same logos . . . it’s one of the best phishing emails I’ve seen.’

Lily Green, of autoswitching service Look After My Bills, says: ‘There are clues to show it’s a fake.
One, if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is. Two, starting an email with ‘hello [email address]’ is a red flag. Alert older relatives.’
A British Gas spokesman says: ‘If customers are concerned about an email, forward it to phishing@centrica.com.’
